The new academic session 2010 - 2011 began on Monday , the 12th of
April.
A workshop for teachers was conducted on Saturday , the 17th
by Dr. Amrita Dass , noted Career Counsellor.
The same day a workshop on Effective Leadership was
conducted for the Prefects and the House Captains by Mrs. Beena
Nathan.
Prefects' Investiture was held on Wednesday, the 21st.
Mrs. Devi Kar, Principal of Modern High School for Girls and Alumnus, was the
Chief Guest, giving her address.

Prize Day for the Juniors was held on Friday , the 23rd.

The play PHANTOM OF THE OPERA was staged at Kala Mandir from Tuesday,
the 4th to Friday, the 7th May.
LMC MODEL UN 2010 was held from Saturday , the 8th to Monday , the
10th May.
INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL AWARD 2010
La Martiniere for Girls, Kolkata is accredited with the International School
Award 2010-2013 by the British Council, in May 2010. The School was
initiated into the Programme by Mr. Mrigank Mukherjee of the British Council
in April 2009. With the guidance of Mrs. H. Peacock , the Principal , the
School organized various activities , workshops , exchange programs and
interactions in the course of the year with friends and partner schools of
various countries. The aim of this Programme is to foster global citizenship
through school links and partnerships that instill values like tolerance,
trust and inter cultural understanding. This Programme was an exciting
journey that helped in developing dynamic teaching learning methods and
learning made fun by broadening the creative horizon of children beyond the
narrow domestic walls. It was an enriching experience for students spread
across Nursery, Primary and Senior school as they studied art and culture
through various projects taken from their curriculum like
- Mountains, the lifeline of civilization.

The Programme was an exciting journey for both students and teachers.
Students made friends with children across the globe imbibing their culture
and learning more about their own traditions and rich cultural heritage.
Teachers enjoyed conducting the activities and workshops on topics taken
from the curriculum and the interest of students noticed in the classroom on
mundane topics like Medicinal Plants and Algebra were especially heartening
and rewarding to them.
According to the Programme Coordinators, Mrs. Ratuli Chakraborty,
Mathematics teacher and Mrs. Rupkatha Sarkar, Vice Principal, the projects
will continue in partnership with schools globally which will reflects the
school's International motto-
"Empower to lead with compassion and integrity". |

Bhasha Utsav, the Language Festival, was organized on the 23rd and
the 24th with different city schools participating for the event. Special
children from The Calcutta Blind School and Srijan Sobha also took part.

AUGUST 2010
Independence Day was celebrated on the 15th by the Senior School. The
national flag was hoisted by the colour party of the Girl Guides followed by
a cultural programme.

La Martiniere Schools, Kolkata were established in 1836. Major General
Claude Martin, the Founder of the La Martiniere Schools, left a generous
endowment with which the schools began their journey. Other schools, two
in Lucknow and one in Lyon, France were established.
13th September, 2010 was a historic moment for the La Martiniere schools
in Kolkata as. the 175th Commemoration Service of the Founder, Major
General Claude Martin was celebrated. The congregation of more than two
thousand people gathered on the Girls' School lawn under a grand shamiana,
complete with chandeliers, floral decorations and plasma televisions.
The Chief Guest for the occasion was His Excellency Shri M. K. Narayanan,
the Hon'ble Governor of West Bengal. Students belonging to the Girls
Guides, NCC, and the Safety Patrol gave the Guard of Honour to the
Governor. The service began with a procession of the School Banner
Bearers, Heads of Departments, House Mistresses and House Masters,
followed by the Vice Principals, the Principals and the Board of
Governors.
Keeping with the tradition, the Battle of Honour was given to the Founder,
blown by the buglers from the army. The School Choir which included both
boys and girls lent their voices to a beautiful rendition of “Gloria In
Excelsis Deo” from the “Twelfth Mass” by W.A. Mozart.
His Excellency M. K. Narayanan was welcomed by His Grace, The Rt. Revd.
Ashoke Biswas, Bishop of Calcutta and Ex-Officio President. This was
followed by the presentation of the Founder’s Medals from both the schools
for scholastic achievements in ICSE and ISC examinations 2010, Sports,
Good Conduct and Principal's All Rounder Medals were also awarded.
The Chief Guest, His Excellency M. K. Narayanan in his address mentioned
the contribution of missionary schools in the field of education and
nation building over the centuries. He exhorted the young minds to strive
for excellence. After his inspiring speech, the Staff Choir added a
special charm to the service with their mellifluous voices. They sang the
beautiful hymn “The Lord is my Shepherd” from “The Vicar of Dibley” by
Howard Goodall. Prayers of Thanksgiving for the Founder, the La Martiniere
Schools in Lyon, Lucknow and Kolkata and for old Martinians followed.
The School Orchestra played the melodious recital of “Gavotte” by F.Gosses.
The Canticle, “Let us Now Praise Famous Men” by R. Vaughan Willam, sung by
the students was followed by a reading from the Book of Proverbs by Jiji
Pappachan, a Prefect of the Girls' School. Sujoy Chakravarthi, Prefect of
the Boys’ School read the second lesson from the Gospel of St. Luke
followed by a sermon by His Grace, The Rt. Revd. Ashoke Biswas. In his
message the Bishop reminded the students of the necessity to show love,
kindness and mercy like the Good Samaritan and continue to fulfill the
vision of the Founder in the days ahead.
The inspiring service drew to a close with the singing of the School Song
and the National Anthem.
Keeping with the tradition, the Service was followed by a sumptuous lunch
for all the two thousand plus invites who attended- including
ex-principals, teachers, pupils, and all guests. Bookmarks, specially made
for the occasion were presented to all as souvenirs for the Schools' 175th
Founder's Day
